“Building a better integrated and resilient society”
On Thursday 8 September 2011, the MINAB held its unique “Building a better integrated and resilient society” conference at the Al Khoei Foundation, in North West London.
MINAB launched its “Mosques in Communities” report at the conference. This groundbreaking, grassroots’ driven report analyses outreach possibilities for British Mosques today and looks at areas where their engagement with local people, community groups and local public bodies could be reinforced. It explores how Mosques can collaborate with others to overcome issues like English Defence League protests and how they, with other local partners, could forge stronger relationships within their neighborhoods. Practical tips on achieving the benefits of engaging with public authorities, community groups and local residents are provided.
The report includes case studies on how Mosques are reaching out to their local communities already and it encourages all Mosques to consider activities like open days to help leverage greater community cohesion.
In the light of recent riots across England, concerns about rising anti-Muslim hate crime, and threats of different extremisms taking hold, it is vital that all communities – and faith communities in particular - play a positive role in shaping their society. This means helping young people cope with issues such as lack of educational attainment, unemployment, drugs and drug-dealing and other pressures. It also points to furthering cooperative action and a renewed faith-inspired spirit to tackle deprivation, poverty, social exclusion and to improve opportunities for all. ![]()
Welcoming the report, Sayeda Khalida Rahman from Muhammadi Trust said:
“The recent riots and regrettable increase in targeting of mosques highlight the need for engagement between all sections of the community. Mosques can play their full part in countering mistrust and they have a lot to achieve by acting as hubs for local neighbourhoods; by increasing participation in the democratic process; by bringing people from different background together to address issues that are important to local people. This report provides an excellent opening for mosques alongside other places of worship to contribute to more resilient and united communities.”
Maulana Mohammed Pandor, Chairman of the Kirklees Imams and Mosques Advisory Board, said:
“An excellent and timely piece of work. Mosques are recommended to review this document thoroughly and slowly start to implement the recommendations.”
