The MINAB Launch

INDEPENDENT COMMUNITY LED BODY TO PROMOTE GOOD GOVERNANCE AND IMPROVE SERVICE STANDARDS IN MOSQUES

The MINAB is a community conceived and community led initiative. It aims to facilitate good governance in mosques and improve the standards of services provided therein through a system of self- regulation. On 10 May 2009 its membership will meet to adopt the Constitution and the General Council of the MINAB will elect its Executive Board and office bearers.

The MINAB has so far been joined by nearly six hundred mosques and Imam training institutes located in all parts of the UK and from all sections of the Muslim communities, Shia’s as well as Sunnis living in Britain.

The MINAB was founded by four voluntary and independent organisations of Muslims – the Al Khoei Foundation, the British Muslim Forum, the Muslim Association of Britain and the Muslim Council of Britain.  The four organisations committed themselves to work together for the betterment of Muslims in the United Kingdom. Following many months of nationally conducted public consultation a Constitution was agreed.

The membership of the MINAB shall, on 10 May 2009 give formal shape to the MINAB as an independent body, non sectarian in its outlook, representing the diversity of Islam with no role in matters of theology and broad based with an accountable system of representation, having already in becoming members agreed to subscribe to its aims and objectives as set out in its Constitution.

Khurshid Drabu, the Project Director and Election Commissioner of the MINAB said, “The launch of MINAB is an historic event not just for the Muslim communities in the UK but for the whole of the society. The MINAB has set an exemplary standard in community development and co-operation. It commits the membership to a structured programme for addressing the practical needs of the Muslim communities. The MINAB aims to be an enabler- not an enforcer. It will assist mosques to function as community hubs and as centres of community cohesion

The formation of MINAB is a huge tribute to the hard work, selfless commitment and leadership of founders of the MINAB that hundreds of mosques and training institutes of Sunnis and Shia’s have shown confidence and trust in joining the MINAB within a short span of about three months. The MINAB demonstrates that the Muslim communities in the United Kingdom are capable of delivering an initiative that has evoked positive interest from other faiths in the UK as well as other countries in Europe with sizeable Muslim communities.”
