Improving the safeguarding of Muslim children with NSPCC

MINAB over the last year as part of the National Advisory Group on Safeguarding and Muslim Children has been working closely with the NSPCC on raising awareness of safeguarding.

A conference was held in London on the Thursday 17th march 2011 to explore how we can work together to improve the safeguarding of Muslim children, and give you the opportunity to:

  • increase your cultural knowledge of Islam and Muslim communities
  • examine the links between Islam and the wellbeing of children
  • consider evidence-based social work practice with Muslim children
  • discuss potentially harmful practices and ways to overcome barriers to safeguarding
  • explore issues affecting deaf and disabled Muslim children
  • discover practical ways to engage with Muslim young people, parents, mosques and madrassahs.

Nasima Patel, Executive Director, NSPCC Services for Children and Families welcomed everyone into the conference and a range of topics were discussed by fellow speakers. Amongst them were, Dr. Fatima Husain, Senior Research Fellow, Policy Studies Institute who talked about policy and practice in safeguarding Muslim children. The presentations were followed by six workshops as well as questions and answer session.

The conference was attended by delegates from various institutions; they ranged from National Autistic Society to Islamic Relief Worldwide.

The event was constructive and proved to be a success, the participants found the conference to be educational and informative.
