FAQ

Why was the MINAB formed?

The MINAB has come into existence due to the needs of the Muslim community in the UK.  The MINAB's aim is to facilitate good practice in mosques and Islamic teaching institutions through a set of core standards related to governance, personnel, participation of women and youth, and civic responsibility on which the member organisations self regulate.  The MINAB will provide an advisory and capacity-building role for member organisations to meet the standards through activities such as institutional mentoring, training programmes, helpline, development of toolkits and facilitation of workshops, seminars and conferences.

What is the MINAB?

The MINAB is the Mosques and Imams National Advisory Board which is an advisory and facilitatory body providing services to mosques and Islamic training institutions in the UK who join its membership.

What are the guiding principles of the MINAB?

The MINAB is community-led and independent.  It works with and represents all Muslim traditions and schools of thought.  The MINAB is guided by the following principles:

  • Transparency
  • Confidentiality
  • Non-sectarianism
  • Representing diversity

What are the Standards?

The Standards were developed by the MINAB through a wide consultation process to facilitate the spread of good practice amongst its members.  There are 5 standards:

  1. Members apply good principles of corporate governance
  2. Members ensure that services are provided by suitably qualified and/or experienced personnel
  3. There are systems and processes in place to ensure that there are no impediments to the participation in the activities, including governance, for young people
  4. There are systems and processes in place to ensure that there are no impediments to the participation in the activities, including governance, for women
  5. Members ensure that there are programmes that promote civic responsibility of Muslims in the wider society

How will the Standards be implemented and monitored?

All members of the MINAB must subscribe to its aims and adhere to the principles set out in the constitution.  By joining the MINAB, members agree to work towards meeting the Standards and they will be supported by the MINAB to do this.  Members will self regulate on the Standards and will be offered accreditation by the MINAB team when they feel that they are meeting all of the Standards.  This approach provides an opportunity to build capacity within the Muslim community and empowers members to share their learning and good practice.  Visits will be undertaken by the MINAB team to monitor this process of self regulation.

What are the benefits of membership?
